Fifteen years ago, this landmark release paved the way for the band’s commercial success and catapulted them into poster boys of Philippine indie music, with their British-inspired songwriting style and pop sensibilities indebted to the likes of The Beatles, The Smiths and other ‘60s and ‘80s pop music. The band was hailed as Best New Artist in the 2004 NU Rock Awards and eventually landed a major record label deal. The rest was history. Fans privy to Orange & Lemons’ history will know that when they officially disbanded in 2007, Castro immediately started his own indie record label, Lilystars Records, and produced indie records in a grassroots, hands-on manner. This time around, an older, wiser Orange & Lemons is in control. And the result is brilliant.

There is something distinctly sassy and kiss-my-assy about the way Castro sings the re-done tracks. The 15-years wiser Castro has clearly lost the ability to take himself too seriously. His voice is his own: relaxed, light, and full of devil-may-care youthfulness with a Mona Lisa smile hidden in his well-wrought tones. Castro’s 2018 voice truly adds a layer of sophistication in the album, made more palpable with the defiant attitude of the Del Mundo brothers that comes through loud and clear in drums and bass. Guitar solos roam free, and rhythms are precise and expertly rendered.

Fans will be glad Orange & Lemons put in the massive effort to re-record these well-loved songs, because the result is an absolute joy to listen to. You can now stream the full album on Spotify!

To promote the record, Orange & Lemons will hold a grand launch via an artist-curated mini-fair on August 4 at Century City Mall in Makati, which they will call “Moonlane Festival.” The band will then embark on a nationwide tour entitled “The LOVE Tour,” covering major cities all over the country with stops in Singapore and Australia. Please regularly check the Orange & Lemons website and social media channels for concert dates.
